Medical Care & Dignity in Old Age
The physical consequences of leprosy are often irreversible if the disease is diagnosed too late. Many older people in the Andhra Pradesh region live with chronic wounds and physical limitations. What is often even more devastating, however, is social isolation: they are shunned by their village communities. Our on-the-ground efforts: Wound care and treatment: Our volunteers visit those affected regularly to properly clean and dress their wounds. Distribution of assistive devices: We provide special protective footwear, bandages, and daily living aids that make life with these disabilities easier. Human connection: We take the time to talk with them. No one should feel untouchable or forgotten because of this disease.
Education & Opportunities for the Next Generation
Children of people with leprosy face an enormous obstacle: even if they are completely healthy, they are often burdened by their parents’ stigma. Without support, they are denied access to public schools, perpetuating the cycle of poverty and social decline. Our on-the-ground initiatives: Enabling access to school: We overcome the bureaucratic and financial hurdles to enable children to attend regular schools. School Supplies & Uniforms: We provide the children with everything they need for class—from notebooks and pencils to the required school uniforms. Tutoring & Support: Since many parents were never allowed to attend school themselves, our volunteers offer additional academic support to ensure that no child falls behind.
